Happy New Year

The boys are ready for their very first New Year's Eve party tonight! I don't have much time to write, but I just posted a few new pictures of the boys' eating and being cute. I hope you all have a very happy, healthy New Year!

Solid food

Well...the boys started solid food! Riley really enjoyed himself, opening his mouth wide and crying if it took me too long to give him another spoonful. He did a good job with getting the cereal off of the spoon and swallowing, too. Ross had a tougher time with the spoon and swallowing, but he laughed the entire time like it was the best game ever invented! I posted some pics so you can see the cutie pies trying to eat. I know the pics aren't that great, but I was trying to feed both babies and take pics at the same time, so forgive me. I'll get better ones soon. The boys had their RSV shots again this week, and their new weights are wonderful! Ross is now 14lbs 15oz and Riley is 15lbs 7oz. That's the first time that there has been less than a pound difference between them! Ross is catching up! I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!

Finalists!!

Thanks to those of you who voted for the boys in the cutest twins photo contest on www.twinsights.com! Because they are so darn cute, the boys were chosen out of hundreds of entries as one of 19 sets of twin "Holiday Honeys." Then, thanks to all of your votes, they won a spot among the top five finalists! They won a Santa Sing-Along DVD and will be recognized on the website next week! The boys are enjoying (sort of....) their first Hanukkah. The first night, Ross was completely exhausted and cried for most of the evening. Then, tonight, Riley was worn out and fussy, so we cut our evening short and came home for a bath and bed. I am grateful that they are ready for bed around the same time each night, but it sure does make special events tough! I can't believe the boys will be 5 months old this Thursday. Time flies when you are having fun!! They'll be starting solid food next weekend, so hopefully I will have some very funny pics to post! Thanks for checking in with us!

Another good weekend

Hi, everyone! We had a good weekend, although we did have to make a quick trip to the doctor's Saturday morning because both boys woke up with a cough and a little bit of a rash. But, the doctor said that their lungs sounded great and it was nothing to worry about! They are doing better today and we were able to go out to lunch with our wonderful friend, Carol, who was Riley's nurse in the NICU. We had a fabulous time visiting with her! The boys got weighed at the doctor's, of course, and Ross is now up to 14lbs 1oz and Riley is at 15lbs 1oz. They are really getting big! Check out the new pics I posted. I was playing around with the "sepia" option on my camera and I got some really cute shots of Ross laughing. Riley was in a more pensive mood and I didn't really get too many of him. I'll make sure to catch him next time!

No more preemie formula

Hi! The boys had their 4 month checkup today and they are doing superbly well!! Ross now weighs 12lbs 15oz and is 22 1/4 inches long. Riley weighs 13lbs 13oz and is 23 1/2 inches long. The doctor was very, very happy with their progress! In fact, they have gained so much weight now that we can stop using the higher calorie preemie formula and switch to regular formula! We also got the go ahead to start trying some solid foods toward the end of next month, so I plan to spend my holiday break from work learning how to spoon feed twins! I hope you all have a wonderful, healthy, happy Thanksgiving!

Weekly Photo Shoot

We had our weekly photo shoot today! The boys had another good week with their nanny and I am getting more used to being back at work. Riley is getting so strong! He is now able to hold his head and chest up for longer and longer while on his tummy. Ross is still working on lifting his head on his tummy, but he is getting better every day. On the other hand, Ross has nearly perfect head control when he is being held sitting up, and Riley still wobbles around a lot. The boys have their checkup this week, so I will have new weights to post soon. I can't wait to see how much they've grown! In case I don't have a chance to post before next weekend, Happy Thanksgiving!

Smiles and laughter

Hi! I just posted some new pics I took of the boys this weekend. They are both doing beautifully! We all survived my first week back at work. The boys seemed to adjust far better than I did! The boys are both getting so big! I don't have current weights, but I will post them in a week or so when they go for their 4 month checkup. The are both smiling and laughing more and more, and they are doing better and better with sleeping through the night. Sorry...no time for more news! -Melissa

I just posted a few new pics of the boys in an adorable outfit that Grandma bought for them!

Our First Halloween

The boys had a great first Halloween! Ross was Piglet, which was his nickname in the NICU because of how much he loved to eat! Riley was Eeyore, because I thought the costume was adorable! We went to a Moms and Babies movie in the morning with Aunt Lyssie and Cousin Reid and Grandma and then we went visit my classroom at Pittsburgh Classical Academy. All of my friends, and my students, got a kick out seeing the boys and their costumes. Some other great news: Both boys are now smiling and laughing, which is the most beautiful sound in the world! Ross' latest weight is 11lbs 2oz and Riley's latest weight is 12lbs 9oz. Both boys are learning to reach for toys and can hold small objects for a little while. They are making lots of noises now and seem to love to hear themselves! It's so much fun to listen to them experiment with their voices. Don't forget to check out the pictures!! Thanks! -Melissa

Update

I just posted more pics, so please take a look! Both boys are doing great, getting more and more head control every day. I got them a Bumbo chair, which you can see in the pics. They are both able to sit up in for a little while, and they really seem to enjoy the change in view! Thanks for looking!

New weights

Hi, everyone! The boys were at the pediatrician's today for their RSV vaccine so we have new weights to report! Riley now weighs 12lbs which puts him at the 25th percentile for his age! Ross is at 10lbs 3oz which puts him at the 5th percentile! That's the first time Ross has even been on the chart for babies his age which is so exciting! For some reason, I can't send you an email anymore when I post new pics, so if you haven't seen the Steeler's outfits, check out the photo page!

Tiny Steelers Fan

I just posted a bunch of pictures of the boys in their Steeler's outfits. There are lots of cute close ups of their faces! I even caught Ross smiling in one!

New pics

I caught Riley rolling over in three separate photos, so check out the picture page! I also got some cute photos of the boys together! Ross fell asleep, so there aren't as many of him, but I'll get more of him next time!

Riley rolled over

Big news!! Riley rolled over today! We were playing and having our tummy time and he flipped over onto his back. I don't think he was quite expecting it, because he looked pretty startled and started to cry, but it's still quite an achievement! Ross is holding his head up more and more and has started to roll onto his side a little bit. Both boys are paying attention to toys and cooing and babbling more and more every day.

Pumpkin Patch

Hi, everyone! The boys are doing beautifully! We had a wonderful day today! We went to Trax Farms with Grandma, Uncle Seth, Aunt Lyssie, Uncle Marc and Cousin Reid. At the farm, there was a huge pile of pumpkins for kids to climb on, but the boys are just a tiny bit too young for climbing, so we took a cute photo of them on my lap on the pumpkins. As you can see, they were both a little sleepy when we took the picture, but I am sure they were having as much fun as we were! Ross was wide awake for most of the day and seemed to enjoy looking around and being outside. Riley decided that it was the perfect time for a nap! As for other exciting news: Both boys are now smiling occasionally which is so gorgeous! Ross is now picking his head up a little more during tummy time and Riley is holding his up for longer and longer. This morning, Riley reached out and batted at a rattle hanging on his bouncy seat! He did it about 6 times in a row, so I am certain that he was doing it on purpose! Also, both kiddos are seeing more and more at farther distances and it is so fun to watch them focus on something and be interested for a few minutes. Thanks for checking in!

Latest weights

Hi, everyone! I finally got DSL, so now I should be able to post much more often and add lots of new pictures! I just added some more recent pics, so please take a look! The boys are doing beautifully, growing and changing every day. The latest weights, from last week, are: Ross was 7lbs 15oz (I am sure he is over 8lbs by now!) and Riley was 9lbs 9oz. Riley made my day today by smiling for the first time! I couldn't get a pic of him smiling yet, but as soon as I do I will post it. Thanks for checking on us!

2 month checkup

Hi, all! The boys had their 2 month check up today (can you believe they are two months old, already??) and they are doing great! Ross now weighs 7 lbs 5 oz and is 19 1/2 inches long. Riley weighs 9lbs 1 oz and is 20 3/4 inches long. Both boys are very healthy and the doctor is thrilled with their progress! They did have to get several shots, which was pretty awful, but so far, they are not having any bad reactions. I apologize for not posting any new pictures. I had a whole roll of film that didn't turn out and so I really don't have any to post right now. I will take some more in the next few days and get them online ASAP! Gotta run.....Ross just woke up and he is HUNGRY!!

Busy and loving it

Hi, everyone! Again, I'm sorry that I haven't been posting as frequently, but these little guys are keeping me pretty busy! Both boys are doing so well! They are more and more alert and really starting to look around and look for me when they hear my voice. Ross has been having a little trouble with his feedings, so we went to the pediatrician and found out that he has reflux! He is now taking Zantac and should be just fine. Apparently, relux is pretty common in preemies and nothing to worry about. He should outgrow it in a year or so. While we were at the doctor's, both boys got weighed. I almost fell over when I saw the weights: Ross is now 7lbs and Riley is now 8 lbs 11oz!!! They are growing so fast! They are 8 weeks old today and have done so amazingly well! I am so grateful! Next week, they have their two month check up and have to get a few shots. Yikes!! I will post some new pics as soon as I can, but it will probably be a few days. Thanks so much for all of your emails and calls!

Growing

Hi! I know it's been quite a while since I have posted, but the boys have been keeping me busy! They are both doing beautifully, growing stronger and bigger each day. Ross, especially, is far more alert and active than he was before. Riley is still enjoying lots of sleeping between feedings. Both kiddos love to cuddle and I am always thrilled when we have time to relax and cuddle when they are awake. Thanks again to everyone who has been checking on us and calling! We appreciate it!

Update

Hello, all! The boys and I are having a blast! We have been going out to lunch with Grandma, Aunt Lyssie, and Reid, going to Starbucks (that should not surprise any of you!), visiting our friend, Bob, at Barnes and Noble, and hanging out at home and at Grandma's. Both boys are eating well, sleeping well, and becoming more and more alert. Riley continues to hold his own head up for short periods of time and Ross has started to visually track the toys hanging over his bouncy seat. We had another great doctor's appointment today! Riley gained another five ounces this week and is now 6lbs 8oz. Ross had an enormous growth spurt and gained 12 oz this week!! He now weighs 5lbs 7oz! Because of their excellent growth, the boys will not have any more appointments just for weight checks. They will see the pediatrician next on Sept. 20 for their regularly scheduled two month check up (and immunizations.....yikes!). Thanks for all of your visits, calls, and emails. I am trying to get back to all of you, but I seem to be a little busy these days!! Thanks for understanding!

Check out the new photos...they are all from when the boys came home! No more hospital pictures!! Yeah!

Checking in

Hi, everyone! The boys are doing very well and we are settling into a routine and enjoying being at home. We have even gone out a couple of times. Yesterday, we went to Target which was hilarious! Imagine us with our huge stroller and a zillion back to school shoppers. We have also gone to my mom's for dinner a couple of times. This morning, the boys had a bath and really seemed to enjoy it, which is surprising, because they usually screamed during their baths in the hospital. Yesterday, we had our first "tummy time" and Riley blew my away by holding his own head up and smiling right at me! I guess he doesn't realize that he's only five weeks old (and a preemie) and shouldn't be able to do that yet! I took lots of pics and will post them later today or tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who has called to check on us. I am sure that you all understand if I don't get back to you right away, but I do appreciate your thinking of us.

Life really begins

We are having so much fun!! I am in seventh heaven with these two amazing little people, finally home and healthy. Our first night, both boys did wonderfully, sleeping well and waking up for feedings every 4 hours. I actually got a couple of hours of sleep, too, which was surprising. However, last night, Riley was wide awake and wanted company, so no sleep for me! Today, we had our first check up at the pediatrician and got some exciting news! I have been going through scale withdrawal....you all know that weigh in time was the highlight of my day in the NICU and I couldn't wait to see how the boys had done since we've been home. But......both boys had fabulous weight gains! Ross gained back the ounce he had lost right before we left the hospital, plus two more and is now at 4lbs 11oz! Riley stunned us with a 7oz gain in two days and is now 6lbs 3oz! His preemie clothes are actually getting snug on him! Since the boys have been home, we have had so many wonderful moments. Yesterday, we went over to my mom's house for a family dinner and it was so wonderful to see the boys with their Grandma, Uncle Seth, Cousin, Reid, Aunt Lyssie and Uncle Marc! Peppe (our dog) finally got to meet the babies and was wonderful with them! Then, when we came home, I put them together in the bassinet for a few minutes and they immediately rolled toward each other, wrapped their legs together, and held hands. (Yes, of course I snapped some pics and I will post them soon!) In the meantime, I am posting some pics from our last few days in the hospital and will post the most recent ones as soon as I can. Thanks for all of your phone calls and messages!

Welcome Home, my sons!

Welcome home, Ross and Riley!!!!!!!!!!!! Obviously, I am beyond thrilled that my two beautiful, healthy sons have finally come home. It has been a long, long road, but there is no better feeling than looking into the nursery and seeing my children sleeping. How did I get so lucky??? Grandma (my mom) helped me bring the boys home and get us all settled in. Then, Ross got to meet his cousin, Reid, this afternoon when Aunt Lyssie came over to welcome the boys home. Reid, who is just over 9 weeks old, is gorgeous and looks soooo big compared Ross! We took some pictures and I will post them as soon as I can. Riley slept through the visit, but I am sure we will get pics of all three cousins tomorrow. Uncle Seth stopped by to welcome the boys, home, too! I will keep posting when I can! Thanks so much for all of your support and care for the boys!

Car seat test...check!

The boys passed the car seat test!!!!!!!! Yeah! Now, as long as they both have a good evening and a good night....we are headed home! Special thanks to Uncle Marc and Aunt Lyssie for installing the car seats in my car today and for having my apartment cleaned so that tomorrow the boys can come to a nice, clean home! I will try to keep posting as often as possible....but something tells me that I will pretty busy for the next few days! :)

Please, please.....

Just a very quick note to let you all know that the boys are doing beautifully! They are continuing to gain weight (Ross is at 4lbs 9.5oz and Riley is at 5lbs 11.5oz) and have adjusted to our move to Pediatrics very well. Later today, the boys have to pass their car seat tests (sitting in their car seats for an hour without and breathing or heart rate problems) in the hopes that they will be dishcarged on Tuesday. Please keep your fingers crossed that they have a great day and a great night so that we can all go home tomorrow!

No more NICU

Big news!!! The boys are now in the Pediatric Unit and out of Intensive Care!!! I am so thrilled! I am staying with the boys overnight now, which is wonderful for all three of us! We will (hopefully!) only be there until Tuesday and then the boys will be coming home, as long as they don't have any more brady's (heart rate drops) between now and then. The each had another weight gain last night, so here are the new weights: Ross is at 4lbs 61/2 oz and Riley is at 5lbs 8oz. Thanks so much for all of your support!

Getting closer and closer...

Hi, everyone! Ross has moved into an open crib and so far, he is doing a great job of keeping himself warm! Riley had a great weight gain last night and is now 5lbs 7oz! He was also measured and is 18 inches long, which is not a big change from last week, but that's ok because he has gained so much weight. Ross lost a tiny bit of weight yesterday, probably because he was moved to an open crib and had to use so many calories to keep himself warm. However, he was also measured and is now 17 1/2 inches long which is a big jump! The doctors are considering changing him to a higher calorie formula to boost his weight gain. It looks like we will be moving to the Pediatric Unit tomorrow, which is a big step! I will be able to stay with the boys and sleep in their room, so we can start to prepare for coming home!

Thursday, August 17, 2006

New pics

Please be sure to check out the new photos! The boys are doing well. They both had great weight gains once again and Ross is now at 4lbs 4.5oz and Riley is now at 5lbs 5oz. They are big boys and I love their chubby cheeks!! Ross is now doing a great job maintaining his own temperature and is almost ready for an open crib, which is a big step in getting ready to go home. The boys are eating well, sleeping calmly, and generally doing beautifully. Depending on how the next few days go, the boys may be moved to a step down unit where I can stay overnight with them, in preparation for them coming home. Of course, it all depends on how they continue to make progress, so please keep your fingers crossed!

I'm back

Hi, everyone! I am being discharged from the hospital today and am feeling much better. My pancreatitis is all gone and my gall bladder has been removed. I certainly didn't want to spend 6 days in the hospital, but at least I knew the boys were safe and well cared for while I recovered. I was also happy to be able to walk down to the NICU several times each day to visit with them while I was in the hospital. A very special thank you to my sister for posting and letting everyone know why I was out of touch for a few days. The boys are doing well! They have each gained some weight since I last posted and here are their current weights: Ross is at 4lbs 2.7oz and Riley is at 5lbs 2.7oz. Riley actually hasn't gained in the past couple of days, so he is going to get formula with some extra calories to see if we can boost his weight gain. Also, he is a little anemic, but the doctors ran some tests and determined that he is making new red blood cells at a good rate and should be just fine. Both boys are now on "demand" feeding which means that they can eat whenever they are hungry (although they are not allowed to go longer than 4 hours without eating) and can eat as much as they want. Ross and Riley are each eating close to 2 1/2 oz at each feeding! That's very similar to what full term newborns eat, which is so exciting! Finally, both boys are still having a few brady's (heart rate drops), which is still expected for preemies at their age. However, that means that neither kiddo is quite ready to come home yet, since they have to go 7 days without a brady before being discharged. So, that's the update! Thanks for checking and caring so much about the boys! -Melissa

Sunday, August 13, 2006

Hi, this is Melissa's sister Ilyssa posting today. Sorry it has been a while since our last post; things have been sort of hectic. Ross and Riley are both doing well and continuing to grow each day. Melissa, however, is not doing quite as well. She is in the hospital and has to have her gallbladder removed. She will unfortunately be there until Wednesday or Thursday. However, she is able to visit the babies frequently, which makes being there not as bad. She's not in terrible discomfort anymore, just pretty tired, as she prepares for surgery. I'll try to post news about the babies every couple of days if possible. As always, Melis says thanks for all of your notes, calls, and general support.

Thursday, August 10, 2006

More great weight gains! Ross is now at 3lbs 8.6oz (that's a whole pound of growth since his birth!!). Riley is now at 4lbs 12.3oz...he is a very big boy! My mom and I had a great night with the kiddos last night, getting them washed up, weighed, and fed before they fell asleep. Thanks again for the phone calls, emails, and messages on the message board. I appreciate all of your support!

Holding my breath....

It's been an exciting morning here so far! First of all, last night both boys had another weight gain. Ross is now 3lbs 6.9oz and continues to love to eat! The doctors increased the amount he is eating at each feeding and he is thrilled! Riley had a tremendous weight gain of 4oz in one day and now weighs 4lbs 10.4oz!! The doctors have decided that he can now eat whatever he wants at each feeding. More exciting news for Riley - he is now big enough to maintain his own body temperature and doesn't need to be in an incubator anymore! He has also been transferred to a regular bassinet. I also got some news this morning that is almost too exciting to think about. First, Riley has to finish his course of IV antibiotics (he still has six more days). Then, as long as he has no more bradys (heart rate drops), maintains his own temperature, continues to gain weight and does well with his feedings - HE CAN COME HOME!!!!! That's a lot of goals and he has to meet them all, so I am trying not to get my hopes up. We will just have to wait and see how he does.

No more tubes!

I had a wonderful suprise waiting for me when I got to the hospital today. Both boys' feeding tubes have been removed and they are taking all feedings by mouth. Riley had a little trouble staying awake for one of his feedings, but he did better the next time. Ross seems to have a neverending appetite and always finishes his whole bottle. The boys look so gorgeous without any tubes on their faces. Special thanks to Karen and Cindy for coming to visit today!
More great weight gains....Ross is now at 3lbs 5.9oz and Riley is at 4lbs 6.6 oz. They are both taking all feedings by mouth and Ross' feeding tube is scheduled to be disconnected today! Riley's will stay in until the 10th and then his should be disconnected, too, as long as he continues to do well with his feedings. We had a great visit last night with my mom and sister. My sister got to hold Riley for the first time! Both boys were alert and looking around and both did very well with their bottles. Ross was a little chilly so the nurse bundled him up very well and he looked even tinier than usual, but still so adorable! We took a picture and I will post it when I can.

Better news

Quick update...the boys are both doing well. Riley's heart rate is nice and stable again, thanks to the quick work of the doctors and nurses and the meds they put him on. His face is much less swollen and his eye is completely better! He is taking almost all of his feedings by mouth now, which is wonderful. Also, he had a great gain of 2 oz yesterday and weighed in at 4lbs 5.2oz! Ross is also doing a super job! He is taking all of his feedings by mouth and loves to eat! He also gained and weighed in at 3lbs 4.4oz.

Scary times

It has been a bit of a tough 24 hours, but things are looking up now. Riley continued to have even more trouble with his heart rate dropping and then, late last night, the left side of his face became red, hard, and swollen, and he was unable to open his left eye. The doctors did lots of bloodwork to determine what was going on and they figured out that he was battling an infection somewhere. So, they started IV antibiotics at midnight last night. Today, he had a CT scan and was seen by an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist, who determined that he has an infected parotid gland (salivary gland), which is causing the swelling. The antibiotics have already started to work and the swelling is going down and he is now able to open his eye again. Thankfully, the antibiotics should completely solve the problem and he should be absolutely fine. The doctors feel that the heart rate dips were due to him fighting the infection, and thankfully, he is having far fewer of them now (all preemies have a few dips but he was having too many!). More good news for Riley....he gained another ounce and now weighs 4 lbs 3oz! Ross also had another gain and is now at 3lbs 3oz. For those of you who have been to visit and have seen Ross' bellybutton....yes, it is weird looking. But, he had an x-ray today and the doctors discovered that he has a hernia, which is why his bellybutton looks that way. It is no big deal and will either get better on his own, or he may have to have it repaired when he is 5 years old. Thankfully, it's nothing we have to worry about now! Thanks for checking on the boys!

Saturday, August 5, 2006

Ross is continuing to do beautifully with learning to drink from a bottle. He has really gotten the hang of it and seems to look forward to eating, which is a great sign. Riley is also learning, although, he is having a little more trouble coordinating sucking, swallowing, and breathing in the right order. He had a bit of a tough evening last night with some heart rate dips, but he is doing much better today.

Piglet!

Another wonderfully exciting day! Ross now weighs 3lbs 1oz and is 14 3/4 inches long!! Riley now weighs 4lbs 2.1oz and is 17 1/2 inches long! I am so proud of how well my boys are growing! Also, both kiddos are making amazing progress with learning to drink from a bottle! Ross took three whole bottles today! His nurse has nicknamed him "Piglet"! Riley took one whole bottle and part of another one today, but he was sound asleep for his third one. I am thrilled with how fast they are learning. Thanks to all of you for reading these updates and for your messages on the message board!

Wednesday, August 2, 2006

Just a quick update....my mom, sister and I went to the hospital tonight for the nightly weigh-in and bath time and we got some exciting news! Ross now weighs 2 lbs 15.9 oz (so close to 3lbs!!) and Riley weighs a whopping 4lbs 1.1 oz!! Yeah!!!!

Gaining weight

More excellent weight gains to report! Ross is now at 2lbs 14.8 oz and Riley is weighing in at 3lbs 15.1 oz. They are both learning to drink from a bottle and to nurse and are taking more and more food by mouth, which is fantastic! The doctors think that they will be ready to move to a step down unit in about a week!

Getting bigger

Another great day with the boys! Ross gained another two ounces and now weighs 2lbs 13.3 oz. Riley also had a gain and now weighs 3 lbs 12.1oz. We had lots of cuddle time, bath time, and diaper changes today. Tonight, I got to hold them both at the same time during their feedings. I just left the hospital after tucking both boys in for the night and they were sleeping soundly, sucking on their pacifiers.

Sunday, July 30, 2006

Eyelashes

Ross and Riley are having a wonderful afternoon, cuddling with mom and singing songs. Both boys are wide awake and playful today! I was actually able to feed Ross a few sips from a bottle, and he did a super job of learning to suck and swallow. He seemed a little confused about what to do, but he got the hang of it fairly quickly. Then, later on I got to feed Riley from a bottle and he was able to take 9cc's by mouth! I am so proud of him! It's amazing how fast they are both growing and changing. They each seem to have grown eyelashes over night! Also, Ross' face is filling out and his cheeks actually look a tiny bit pudgy today. They are both simply gorgeous!

Saturday, July 29, 2006

silly time

We had wonderful evening! I got to give Riley his bath, which he actually seemed to enjoy. He was wide awake and alert the whole time and didn't cry at all. Ross, on the other hand, screamed through his entire bath and let everyone know that he was most unhappy! Aunt Lyssie and our friend, Lynn, came to visit, which was so much fun! The wonderful nurses put both boys together on our boppy pillow and we took some photos of the boys hanging out together. As soon as I get them, I will post them. They are hilarious! I was able to hold both boys at the same time during their feedings, which was special for all three of us. They were both wide awake at the beginning and slowly drifted off to sleep while I was holding them. It was a perfect ending to a perfect evening! Another great bit of news...both boys are gaining weight! Just like all babies, they lost some weight right after they were born and are now gaining it back. Ross has already surpassed his birth weight and is now at 2lbs 11 oz and Riley is on his way back up at 3 lbs 11oz.

Special night

What a special night! Grandma and I got to spend a couple of hours with the boys. I got to give both boys a bath, which relaxed them both. Actually, it relaxed Riley so much that he pooped all over his freshly made bed right after his bath! We had our nightly weigh in and both boys gained again!! Ross is now 2 lbs 11.4 oz and Riley is now 3 lbs 12.1 oz. Finally, Grandma and I each held one of the babies during their feeding while they fell asleep.

Getting dressed

It's time to get dressed! Both boys are now allowed to wear t-shirts or onesies. Yesterday, I got to dress Riley in his first T-shirt and hopefully, Ross will get dressed later today. I will get some photos of them dressed and post them as soon as I can. I had wonderful cuddle time with both little guys yesterday, but there isn't too much else new to report. Both boys had nice, quiet nights and are doing well again today.

Happy One Week Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Ross and Riley!! The boys are one week old today!!!Both babies are continuing to make super progress! Riley's IV has now been discontinued and he is breathing room air, without any support! Ross' feedings are going beautifully and he is now eating the maximum amount for his size. He has also gained 1.5 ounces, which is great! Riley is actually eating almost as much as Ross now, but he will continue to have some more increases in his feedings since he is a little bit bigger. I was finally able to nurse Ross for a couple of minutes yesterday, and I have been able to nurse Riley a few more times, too. Yesterday, we had a fabulous time with Aunt Lyssie (my sister Ilyssa) when she got to spend some time with both boys. Both little guys were pretty sleepy during her visit, but it was still fun to take pictures of both kiddos with her. The nurses have started to let me do more and more with each baby, and it makes me feel so good to be more involved in their care. I have been able to take their temperatures, change diapers, get them in and out of their incubators, swaddle them, and help with their baths. Check out the photo gallery...I just posted lots of new pics!

Double armful of love

Last night was incredible! I got to hold both of my sons at the same time! It was a moment I have been waiting for, and it was just as amazing as I thought it would be. A very special thank you to Candice for coming to pick me up and take me over to visit the boys! We took tons of photos and I am hoping to get them online and posted later today. Both boys are doing beautifully, breathing room air, moving along with their feedings, and just generally making great progess!

Smiling??

My dear friend Emily took me to the NICU this afternoon to visit the boys (I can't drive for another few days because of the c-section) and we had a wonderful time! The best news is that Riley has been breathing room air all day with only minor nasal cannula support. He has not needed any oxygen support all day! Yeah! Also, the current plan is to remove Riley's IV tomorrow night. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I was able to hold both boys and Riley nursed again for a couple of minutes. Riley made an adorable face that looked suspiciously like a smile. I didn't think that babies could smile this early, but his nurse told me that she thought it looked like a smile, too, and that there was no way to tell if it was a reflex or a real smile. So, she suggested that we consider it a smile! I'm heading back over there tonight, so I'll add some more news tomorrow!

Portable Ross

When I called to check on the boys early this morning, the nurses had some exciting updates! Ross' IV was removed last night and he is doing just fine without it. Now that he is no longer connected to the IV, he is more "portable" and the nurses were able to take him to visit Riley for some photos! I can't wait to see them!

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

Quick update...

Great news! Riley is off of the C-PAP machine and only has some minor nasal oxygen support! His feedings have increased and this afternoon I got to change his diaper and nurse him for the first time!!! Ross has made such great progress with his feedings that his IV will be removed tonight! Way to go, kiddos!

More good news

More good news! The boys continue to make amazing progress! Ross is now getting over half of his nourishment with tube feedings and is quickly reducing his dependence on IV supplements. Riley has also started tube feedings and is doing beautifully with them! Both boys are now able to use a pacifier, which is an important step in learning to suck and to eat. Riley is also making great gains in his breathing and steadily decreasing his need for oxygen support. Both babies are becoming more and more alert and interactive, making eye contact and crying when they are hungry or want attention. It's amazing to see how quickly they are learning and growing! On a silly note, both boys have met the important milestone of peeing all over a freshly made bed! The NICU nurses have been so amazing with helping me to learn about the boys' care and allowing me to hold them as often as I can. Last night, I got to spend some time with each boy, cuddling and singing. It was a bittersweet time, because when I hold them, time stands still and there is nothing in the world that could make me happier. And yet, I was discharged from the hospital yesterday and it was terribly hard to go home without them. However, I will be with them every day, and I am so grateful that I live close enough to be able to visit as often as I'd like. Thanks so much for your wonderful emails, phone calls, and messages on the message board! Your support means so much to me, my family, and the babies!

The beginning.....

Ross and Riley were born via c-section on Friday, July 21, 2006 at 3:22 pm (Ross) and 3:25 pm (Riley). Ross weighed 2lbs 8oz and was 14 inches long and Riley weighed 3 lbs 14 oz and was 16.5 inches long. Ross was taken immediately to the NICU, where he let everyone know that he was ready to party! He used his fabulously healthy lungs to tell everyone exactly what he thought by crying loudly! He has been breathing room air without assistance since he was born, which is an amazing accomplishment for such a little guy. The nurses tell us that he is a "feisty, wild man" and we are thrilled to hear it. I have been able to hold him for short periods each day so far and our cuddle time has been the highlight of my days. Riley had to have surgery to remove a testicular torsion (twisted testicle) immediately after birth. He was transported to Children's Hospital where the surgery was performed and then transferred back to the NICU at West Penn on Saturday. (The surgery went perfectly and he will have no residual problems in that area!) He needed a little bit of help breathing after the surgery and was on a ventilator for a short time, but is now breathing much more on his own with only C-PAP (pressurized oxygen) for help. He has let the NICU nurses know that he prefers to hang out in peace and quiet and has been making steady progress with his breathing each day. Yesterday, I finally got to hold him for the first time! We had 15 minutes to cuddle, which was incredible. Both boys are dealing with a bit of jaundice, which is extremely common for preemies and will be resolved soon. They are also dealing with some feeding issues and will make slow and steady progress in that area, too. We all have a bit of a long road ahead of us, but the boys are here and safe. The nurses and doctors in the NICU are amazing and I am so grateful to have such skilled people caring for my sons. No one knows yet how long the boys will have to stay in the hospital, but we will all do whatever it takes to get them home strong and healthy. Thank you all for your prayers, visits, phone calls, and emails. Your support has been amazing and I appreciate it all so much. Please let me know if you want to come meet the boys and I will arrange a visit for you!

Melissa (Mommy or should I say "Ross' & Riley's Mommy" because that's what you'll be known as for the next 18 years), I just can't believe I'm looking at your sons. It's so incredible. Who could think there is no God? They are each a miracle in and of themselves. They are certainly "fearfully and wonderfully made". (Don't ask for the verse reference, I have to look it up.)

They are wonderful and it sounds as if they are making excellent progress. You must look forward to the weekends so that you can be home with them all day and night. Right? Thanks for sharing.

Hi Everyone, We just returned from a visit to Brazil, visited Eric's family and had a wonderful time. Getting back to "normal" whatever that is! We really enjoy seeing the pics of Riley and Ross, loving their smiles and chubby cheeks. They are quite amazing considering their beginning sizes and development. We wish you the very best for the new year and for many more to come. Love to all, Ann and Eric

I can't believe the boys are getting so big . . . big enough for the playground swings! I can remember when they were too small the the infant swing in the unit! They look absolutely adorable in their raincoats. And their videos were wonderful . . . especially Riley playing peek-a-boo and laughing. Hugs and Kisses to both boys!

Thanks for sharing the pics and keep them coming.
